We’ll be discussing an episode from This American Life “Switched at Birth” which tells the astonishing true story of two baby girls, Martha and Sue, who were accidentally switched at birth in 1951 at a small hospital in Wisconsin. The mistake wasn’t discovered until decades later when one mother, Mary Miller, began suspecting that her daughter, Marty, looked more like the McDonald family than her own. The story unfolds as the two families grapple with the truth, questioning identity, nature vs. nurture, and the meaning of family. The women reflect on their upbringing, the relationships they formed, and whether knowing the truth changed who they believed themselves to be. It’s a powerful exploration of belonging, fate, and how much of our identity is shaped by the families who raise us.
