Tell us about you!

Hi! I’m Carol, the mixed-media artist behind Modartzy Designs. With a background in Interior Design and Psychology, I specialize in color consulting and home accessorizing. Though I’m not traditionally trained, my love for color shines through in each piece I create—I’m entirely self-taught and pour my passion into every detail.

I grew up in Burlington, MA, and after a seven-year adventure in Phoenix, AZ (where both my kids were born), we made our way back to Massachusetts. A fun fact about me? I dream of owning a home with a barn to convert into a spacious studio where I can expand my creative work!

When I’m not creating, you can find me reading nonfiction or memoirs and watching movies with a meaningful message. My heart’s favorite place is Sedona, AZ—it’s visually stunning, and it’s where I got married on Bell Rock.

Where do you go when no one wants to cook dinner?

In our house, we’re definitely creatures of habit. Our go-to choices are usually pizza or Asian food, and we tend to rotate between Wood & Fire, All Season’s Table, Kowloon, and Lisa’s Pizza. Fun fact: I have a kid-like palate—I’m a big fan of mac & cheese and candy!

Favorite things to do in town?

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of serving on several committees in our community. I especially loved being involved in community storytelling gatherings, the community book read program, and various fundraisers. Beyond that, I enjoy visiting art museums, attending art openings, listening to live music, having deep conversations with good friends, and taking city getaways.

Tell us about your craft/business! Best part.

I’m an abstract painter, which can be a bit misunderstood at times! I focus on creating pieces where color speaks louder than the design, inviting each viewer to interpret the work in their own way—which often doesn’t match what I see, and I love that.

The best part for me is sharing the process. The most common question I get is, ‘How do you make this happen?’ I enjoy explaining how each piece evolves from the original painting to become an art print, custom throw pillow, or wearable art. One surprising fact: I always start with a color palette, not a design. While I can influence the direction the paint takes, I usually let it flow naturally. My work aims to evoke emotion through its rich hues and free-flowing forms.
